Safety-codes

To open each safe, you must enter their Safety-code in the correct order. The number on each key tells you how many squares to move, and the letters tell you in which direction (U = up, D = down, L = left or R = right). From the following safes’ entry keypads, can you determine which is the first key that must be pressed in the code in order to open each safe? (Hint: Try working the Safety-code backward.)

Safe A
Safe B

Alphametics

Find the number equivalent for the following alphametic expressions to make the equations true. Each letter is unique with values from 0 to 9. (Note: There may be more than one answer.)

  1. XYZ + XYZ + XYZ = ZZZ
  2. MATH + ATH + TH + H = 5000
  3. ZERO + ONE + TWO = THREE (given R = 3)
  4. TWO + THREE + SEVEN = TWELVE (given V = 5)
  5. SEVEN + SEVEN + SIX = TWENTY (given I = 5, W = 3 and X = 0)

Letter grid

In the following diagram, each of the nine letters stand for a number (1 through 9, without repeats). Using the following clues, can you determine the number that represents each letter A through I?

Clues:

  1. In one diagonal, each number is a square.
  2. D, C and I are odd numbers in ascending order.
  3. G is the sum of A and F.
  4. B is the product of E and H.
  5. One row has consecutive numbers in some order.

An 8’s Puzzle

Using eight eights and using addition only, can you make a sum equal to 1000?

Solution: 888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 1000

Note: There must be 5 values of 8s in order to get the 0 as the last digit of 1000.

The Four Studios Puzzle

Four friends, Alex, Beth, Carl, and Dana, each rent a different art studio in a row of four units: Studios 1, 2, 3, and 4 (from left to right).  Each person works in a different medium (Oil, Watercolour, Sculpture, and Digital) and prefers a different music genre (Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Ambient) while working.  Determine which of the friends are in which studio, and what their medium and music preferences are using the following eight clues.

  1. Beth’s studio is not at either end of the row.
  2. The Sculpture studio is immediately to the right of the Digital
  3. The person who listens to Rock works two studios away from Alex’s (i.e., there is exactly one studio between them).
  4. Studio 3 is used for Watercolour and does not play Jazz.
  5. Carl works in a studio next to and left of Dana’s studio, but neither of them is in Studio 1.
  6. The Classical music studio is to the right of the Jazz studio
  7. The Oil painter listens to Ambient
  8. Dana does not work in Digital.
